INFO FOR PARENTS

Why send your child to camp?

Sunrise Summer Camp is a unique experience where high schoolers can spend a week with other students passionate about making change in their community. Students attend camp from across the United States, each bringing a different perspective on the climate crisis. At Sunrise Summer Camp, your child will learn key leadership and advocacy skills that they can use not only in this program, but through the rest of their life.

Who is leading the camp?

Sunrise Summer Camp is led by the Sunrise Movement, a nationally recognized youth movement fighting to stop climate change. For the past 7 years, Sunrise has been at the front of climate policy fights and organizing in cities across America. We’ve led programs supporting hundreds of high school students to take action in their communities and schools. Sunrise is a non-profit organization.

What can you tell us about your staff?

- We have a core support staff as well as counselors who closely work to support all our campers! We work together as a team to make sure your child is safe, well fed, taken care of, and has a great, fun experience at camp.
- Camp Sunrise Counselors are committed to the health and wellbeing of every student. Counselors are young people who are dedicated to building a better world for all, and some have even participated in Sunrise programs in the past! With our close knit community and regular check-ins, counselors can provide each student personal attention to ensure all needs are met and your student is supported while at camp.

How will I be contacted about my child's wellbeing?

- Our camp team will make sure you’re able to contact your child at any time, and students will be allowed to have cell phones for direct communication.
- While unlikely, in the event of any emergency, you will be immediately contacted, and the camp team will work with you and your child to decide the best course of action.
- If your student tests positive for COVID-19, you will be notified and your student will be offered a bunk at the camp infirmary. We’ll work with you to determine the best plan to get your child home safely and minimize risk of COVID exposure to others. Medical care/hospitals are located close to Camp Manitowa.

How will my child’s needs be met?

- We take the emotional and physical wellbeing of all our campers very seriously. Camp Sunrise will work hard to meet every student's needs.
- Campers will be with counselors throughout the day, and will always have people they can turn to for support
- We can support campers with traveling (even if for the first time!) and will be picking campers up directly from the airport.
- We take precautions around COVID-19, including daily testing, masking for all travel, and vaccination requirements (unless there are medical exceptions).
- All food and snacks will be provided. We have a kitchen at Camp Manitowa that is able to accommodate all common dietary restrictions - feel free to reach out to us for more details. If you have any other specific requirements or requests, please let us know!
- If you have any questions, please join us at an informational session on May 21st or May 30th, or to contact us directly at summercamp@sunrisemovement.org
